DESCRIPTION:Swami Turiyananda\nPre-Monastic Name: Harinath Chattopadhya\nPlace of Birth – North Kolkata\nDate of Birth – 3rd January 1863 \nSwami Turiyananda was born on 3rd January 1863 to Chandranath Chattopadhya an orthodox Brahmin who worked for a British firm in Kolkata\, and had the power to foretell the future. \nHe met Sri Ramakrishna for the first time some time in 1876-77\, at the age of 13 or 14 at Dinanath Basu’s house in Kolkata. \nAround 1880\, he went to Dakshineswar and visited the Master again\, and gradually became familiar with Sri Ramakrishna. \nIn January 1887\, he took final monastic vows with other brother disciples by performing the traditional viraja homa in front of the Master’s picture. \nA few years later\, he left the Baranagore Monastery and went to Rishikesh\, Gangotri\, and other places in the Himalayas\, and settled in Rajpur on the Mussoorie hills to practise Sadhana. He also travelled with his brother disciples to various places in the country. \nIn June 1899\, he left for England and America with Swami Vivekananda and Sister Nivedita. He gave lectures on Vedanta on Swamiji’s command. He was a living example of Vedanta to all. In July 1900\, on the train from New York to California\, just before Swamiji got off the train at Detroit\, he asked Swamiji about his future work\, and was told “Go and establish the ashrama in California. Hoist the flag of Vedanta there. From this moment\, destroy even the memory of India. Mother will do the rest”. He then established the “Shanti Ashrama” \nAt the ‘Shanti Ashrama’\, he freely distributed the greatest spiritual treasures of Vedanta to the American students. He lived a life and trained enabled others to live the life as well. \nIn late 1901\, due to ill health\, left for India in May 1902 (after a period of 2 years 9 months stay in the US). He handed the Ashrama to one of his disciples – Gurudas. His only desire at this time was to see Swamiji (Swami Vivekananda). During his voyage\, he learnt from a passenger’s newspaper that Swamiji had passed away\, and changed all plans for work. Now he wanted to immerse his life in meditation and austerity.\nThe then went to live at Vrindavan like a traditional monk. He travelled to many place\, and practised severe austerities neglecting his body completely\, and thus also suffering tremendous ill health. \nIn February 1919\, he went to Varanasi and lived there till the end of his life for 3½ years. He passed away at 6.45 pm on 21 July 1922\, at Varanasi. \nSwami Turiyananda was indeed an awakener of souls. His fiery words to his students were: “Clench your fists and say: I will conquer! Now or never – make this your motto\, even in this life I must see God. That is the only way. DESCRIPTION:Pre-monastic name :\nRakhal Chandra Ghosh\nDate of Birth : 21 January 1863\nPlace of Birth : Sikra Kulingram\,\n \nRakhal was devoted to God and used to practise meditation even in boyhood. At the age of 12 he was brought to Kolkata for his studies. There he met Narendra (later known as Swami Vivekananda) and\, under his influence\, joined the Brahmo Samaj. According to the custom prevalent in those days\, he was married at the age of 18 to Vishweshwari. Soon after marriage Vishweshwari’s brother Manomohan Mitra\, who was a close devotee of Sri Ramakrishna\, took Rakhal to the Master. Prior to that Sri Ramakrishna had had a vision in which he saw the Divine Mother showing him a child who would be his son. As soon as Rakhal came to Dakshineswar\, Sri Ramakrishna recognized him to be that child and treated him like a son. \nAfter a few visits\, Rakhal came to Dakshineswar to live permanently with Sri Ramakrishna. Under the Master’s guidance\, he practised intense spiritual disciplines\, and attained high levels of spiritual illumination. After the Master’s mahasamadhi in 1886 when the new Monastic brotherhood was formed at Baranagar\, Rakhal joined it. He underwent sannyasa ordination and assumed the name Brahmananda. \nTwo years later he left Baranagar Math and lived an intensely contemplative life at Varanasi\, Omkarnath\, Vrindaban\, Hardwar and other places. During this period he scaled the highest peak of non-dualistic experience and used to remain absorbed in Samadhi for days together. In 1890 he returned to the Math. When Swami Vivekananda\, after his return to India in 1897\, wanted to give a new turn to monastic life\, Swami Brahmananda whole-heartedly supported him. There was deep love between these two monastic brothers. After establishing Belur Math monastery when Swami Vivekananda got Ramakrishna Math registered as a Trust\, Swami Brahmananda became its President. He held this post till the end of his life. \nDuring his tenure as President\, the Ramakrishna Order underwent great expansion\, and several new branch centres were opened in India and abroad. The Ramakrishna Mission\, which had been founded by Swami Vivekananda as an Association\, was revived and registered during his time. His stress on contemplative life served to counterbalance the activities undertaken by the monks. During those difficult formative years he gave great stability to the Sangha. For his kingly qualities of administration\, Swami Vivekananda gave him the appellation ‘Raja’\, and since then he was respectfully referred to as ‘Raja Maharaj’ by all. He was one of the six disciples of Sri Ramakrishna whom the Master regarded as ishvarakotis. \nHe gave up his body\, after a brief illness\, on 10 April 1922. DESCRIPTION:Ekadasi is one of the regular festivals celebrated in all centres of the Ramakrishna Math & Ramakrishna Mission across the world and Ramnama Sankirtanam is sung by the congregation on this day. \nThe singing of this Sankirtanam was started by Srimat Swami Brahmanandaji Maharaj who was the spiritual son of Sri Ramakrishna. He was also the first President of the Ramakrishna Sangha. \nOnce during the singing of the Sankirtanam in the Ramakrishna Mission Sevashrama at Varanasi\, Swami Brahmanandaji Maharaj had the Darshan of Sri Hanuman. \nThe 108 slokas of the Ramnama Sankirtanam\, contain a brief and succinct description of the Divine Play of Maryada Purshottam Sri Rama – as if the ocean has been filled into a small pot! (The cassette/ CD for the Ramnama Sankirtanam is also available at the bookshop.) \nJoin the congregation in singing hymns to Lord Rama and partake of the Ekadasi Prasada (before the Arati).

SUMMARY:Swami Vijnanananda Jayanti
DESCRIPTION:Swami Vijnanananda (30 October 1868 – 25 April 1938)[1] was born as Hariprasanna Chattopadhyaya in an upper-class family near Dakshineswar.[2] He was a direct disciple of Ramakrishna. He was an engineer and worked as the District Engineer in the erstwhile State of United Provinces\, India. He was a great scholar of Sanskrit with expertise in religio-philosophical works\, astronomy\, civil engineering etc. He spent considerable time in Allahabad (Prayag) centre of Ramakrishna Math. He became the President of Ramakrishna Mission in 1937. It was under his presidency and direct supervision that the Ramakrishna Temple at Belur Math was constructed and consecrated. \n\nThere will be a discourse on Life of Swami Vijnanananda by Swami Jishnudevananda on Sunday\, 29th November 2020 after Evening Arati at Universal Temple\, Ramakrishna Math\, Mumbai.

SUMMARY:RamNaam Sankirtanam
DESCRIPTION:Ekadasi is one of the regular festivals celebrated in all centres of the Ramakrishna Math & Ramakrishna Mission across the world and Ramnama Sankirtanam is sung by the congregation on this day. \nThe singing of this Sankirtanam was started by Srimat Swami Brahmanandaji Maharaj who was the spiritual son of Sri Ramakrishna. He was also the first President of the Ramakrishna Sangha. \nOnce during the singing of the Sankirtanam in the Ramakrishna Mission Sevashrama at Varanasi\, Swami Brahmanandaji Maharaj had the Darshan of Sri Hanuman. \nThe 108 slokas of the Ramnama Sankirtanam\, contain a brief and succinct description of the Divine Play of Maryada Purshottam Sri Rama – as if the ocean has been filled into a small pot! (The cassette/ CD for the Ramnama Sankirtanam is also available at the bookshop.) \nJoin the congregation in singing hymns to Lord Rama and partake of the Ekadasi Prasada (before the Arati)
